Living > What Can I Do on International Human Rights Day? - December 10, 2005

~ Published: 2005-12-09

December 10th is International Human Rights Day and if you are anything like me, then it is a day when you feel like you are suppose to do something but you are not quite sure what to do. As long as you agree with the idea that everyone is entitled to "Human Rights," (defined below) then I sure you would have no problem supporting the day, but what do you do? The United Nations says that we should "recommit ourselves to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and let us rededicate ourselves to wiping the scourge of torture from the face of the earth," (United Nations: Human Rights Day 2005) but that doesn't really tell me what I should do either.

After searching the web, I found this great page with exactly the thing to help; a list of companies that have been accused of Human Rights violations. Here is something you could do on this day, you could take this list and do with it what you, as a supporter of Human Rights, think you should. I have one suggestion, you could email this page to your friends.

Global Exchange's 2005 List of "Most Wanted" Corporate Human Rights Violators
http://www.globalexchange.org/getInvolved/corporateHRviolators.html

Human Rights is defined as: "the concept of human beings as having universal rights, or status, regardless of legal jurisdiction, and likewise other localizing factors, such as ethnicity and nationality. For many, the concept of "human rights" is based in religious principles, or else is otherwise directly related to them." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights)
