RSS is great! I cannot believe that I have not paid much attention to it before.
As a web designer I have seen it around for a couple of years but never got
a request to implement it, nor did I see much use in disseminating “news,” which
was apparently its primary purpose. BUT NOW, I see it in an entirely new light.
News is not just what the television, newspaper, radio or the major web portals
tell you is news. News is the information that is important to you! News is
information about the things high on your list of priorities. And for most
people I know, a couple of the things highest on their list of priorities are
family and friends.
Like many things in my life, I use RSS in both my business and personal life.
In my personal life, it has allowed me to select the web sites that I want
to stay informed about and “subscribe” to them so that whenever
there is new content, say a new picture of a nephew or niece; for example,
I get to see it right away. It allows me to stay up-to-date without having
to constantly visit web sites to make sure that I am. You can even search using
keywords for “feeds” from web sites that match your interests and
subscribe to those so that those “search results” that you are
use to from a search engine can be sent to you whenever anything changes. This
means
you get the information that is important to you as soon as it is available.
I love it!
I have also been adding RSS to my web sites. I have done so in two ways, the
first was to create an RSS “feed” like I mentioned above, and the
second was to add other feeds that I find interesting to the bottom of my homepage.
The RSS feed for this web site can be found at http://www.GaryIsse.com/feed.xml.
It can also be accessed by clicking the RSS & XML buttons to the left or on
my homepage as well. The feed contains information about the latest
15 entries to the web site
and
is
updated
almost instantly. If my web site interests you, you can subscribe to
it so that any new information is sent to you right away. It is kind of like
a mailing list but you are not dependent on that email and what someone decides
to write in it. Subscribing is easy once you have the program, reffered to
as an RSS Reader, or online account through a site like Yahoo. If you need
more information about that
click the
"What is this?" link.
One of my goals with this web site is to make it a little easier for people
to find information about green topics. With the help of RSS, I have been able
to add the feeds of a couple of green sites to the bottom of my homepage as
well, allowing visitors to my web site to see the latest headlines from those.
If you happen
to have a site with a feed and you think it might relate, please let me know.
In the meantime, I hope you found this article useful and consider adding me
to your RSS reader. Happy Surfing!
