In April of last year, I posted an article about the unnecessary waste of energy in incandescent light bulbs. Well, apparently, there are enough people somewhere that care to do something about it. CarbonFund.org recently announced that Australia is planning to ban the incandescent light bulb, hoping to cut emissions by 4 million metric tons by 2012, and be the first country in the world to take this impactful step. Although California has been considering the idea for a while, it has yet to take any serious steps in that direction.
"Mathematically and environmentally, the CFL push makes perfect sense. It requires less than 1/3 of the energy needed to power an incandescent light and lasts roughly ten times longer. Over its lifetime, a CFL can save about half a ton of CO2 and more than pays for itself in cutting down the utility bill.(http://carbonfund.org/site/more/media/331)
By the way, in case you're wondering what CarbonFund.org is, it is my favorite way to offset my carbon emissions. I've been using them for two years straight now and strongly recommend that everyone wrap each year up by paying them, or another carbon offsetting group, a visit. When you leave the beach, park, or other beautiful place, you don't leave your trash there, you clean up after yourself. There is no reason why we shouldn't do the same with our carbon emissions, whether we can see them or not.
